Abstract: Alphabetical words consist of meaningless characters, and their processing is complex including the morpheme-phoneme transformation. In the present study, we examined human semantic learning using German characters in 17 inexperienced Japanese students. Twenty German characters were presented before and after a learning phase, and an EEG was recorded using 30 electrodes and averaged for each condition. The learning phase took approximately 20 min. Twenty other German characters served as control stimuli. Successful learning was observed in all subjects. The evoked potential maps displayed the largest components as P1, N2, and P3. Only P3 latency shortened after learning. In contrast, no significant difference was observed in the amplitudes covering laterality in P1 and N2.These findings, suggest that semantic learning of German characters is not strongly related to neurophysiologicalchanges at an early stage and reguires a longer processing time induced by intensive short-term learning.
