Abstract: This qualitative study explored the consciousness regarding food in university students today living in Tokyo, brought up by mothers who was born after the 1960s, focusing on how students think about the extremely poor meal. Protocol by the free answer method was used and data analysis was consistent with grounded theory procedures. Five major categories emerged from the data:( a)“ concrete evaluation of meal contents” ;( b)“ abstract evaluation of meal contents” ;( c)“evaluation to mother based on meal contents” ;( d)“ judgment whether or not accepted as a meal”; and( e)“suggestion to the contents of the meal”. Furthermore, a storyline was generated that narrated these five categories and their relationships. Findings are discussed in terms of their implications for Japanese young mothers.
